Frustrated: Jamie Joseph

Highlanders head coach Jamie Joseph has revealed his frustration over the team's missed chances in their last two games.

Last week's win over the Reds got the Highlanders season started after an opening loss to the Crusaders, but tries have gone begging in both matches.

The victory over the Reds for instance could have been a lot more convincing.

"We were really disappointed, we created a lot of opportunities last week, and even the week before [against the Crusaders]," Joseph told the Dominion Post.

"As Brownie [assistant coach Tony Brown] has been saying, if the 5m line was the tryline then we'd have scored a lot of tries.

"We've just got to execute a little bit better and if we can do that, then we can put teams away. For one reason or another we are making mistakes at crucial times through [bad] decisions or skills."

Joseph added that only the highest level of performance would guarantee any success this season, with the Chiefs setting the benchmark.

"Whatever the reason is, the outcome is the same. We really need to look to the Chiefs - their performance against the Crusaders was outstanding. We know that if we aren't at the top of our game, we aren't going to get a result.

"For us, that's a good thing."
